State-Level Sport Climbing Awareness Program Kicks Off at 58 GTC, Happy Valley

Shillong, August 21: The State Level Awareness Program on Sport Climbing and Adventure Activities 2025 began today at the Eastern Command Sport Climbing Node, 58 Gorkha Training Centre (GTC), Happy Valley.

The event was inaugurated by Shri D.D. Shira, MCS, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, in the presence of Brig. Joe Sabby, Commandant, 58 GTC, and Mr. Finely Pariat, General Secretary, Meghalaya State Olympic Association.

Organized by the Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association in collaboration with 58 GTC and supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, the two-day program aims to promote sport climbing and adventure sports across the state.

A key highlight was the unveiling of a new international-standard climbing wall at the Centre, designed for Bouldering, Lead, and Speed disciplines. Officials expressed hope that the facility will inspire greater participation among the youth.

The program brought together 96 participants from 10 districts, with students of Army Public School, Happy Valley, also witnessing an impressive climbing demonstration by the Eastern Command team.

The Association extended gratitude to 58 GTC for its support in hosting the initiative and providing access to its state-of-the-art climbing wall.
