Heavy rainfall in Meghalaya on Thursday has led to tragic incidents in the East Khasi Hills district, claiming two lives and injuring three others. The continuous downpour, which has lasted over two days, has caused widespread disruption across several areas.

The victims have been identified as Klosliya Kharkongor, 50, from Lumkyntung village under Laitkroh-Khararshnong Block, who died in a landslide, and Samborlang Tariang, 35, from Mawbynna, Pomlakrai, who drowned during the flooding.

According to official reports, at least 25 villages have been affected by the heavy rains, impacting a total of 1,023 people. Fourteen of these villages are located within the East Khasi Hills district.

The rainfall has also damaged 12 houses, including four in East Khasi Hills, and affected 25 structures such as school buildings and other public facilities.

In response, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma held a high-level review meeting to assess the situation and directed district administrations and government departments to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautionary and relief measures.

He also instructed Deputy Commissioners to release an ex gratia amount of ₹4 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the rain-related incidents.
