The Meghalaya Cabinet on Wednesday approved a six-month extension of the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to facilitate completion of the ongoing election process.

The decision was taken as the existing extension expires on 17 October, 2026 with the electoral process, including deliberations and preparation of the electoral roll, still underway.

The Cabinet has now extended the Council’s term for another six months, with the government expecting the GHADC election process to be completed within this period.
