150 YEARS OF VANDE MATARAM COMMEMORATED DURING WORLD ART DAY IN SHILLONG
World Art Day Celebration 2026 was celebrated on April 15 at Lok Bhavan, Shillong, marking the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci and commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram.
Former Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope attended as Chief Guest. The event also saw the presence of senior officials, members of the International Association of Art – India, and members of the artistic community.
In his address, Pyngrope underscored the significance of art in shaping society and described Vande Mataram as a symbol of India’s cultural identity and freedom struggle. He also highlighted the state’s artistic landscape, describing Shillong as a natural canvas, and commended efforts to promote art in the region.
A memorial art exhibition was inaugurated on the occasion, featuring a range of artistic works.
Speaking at the programme, Manaj Saha highlighted the artistic potential of Meghalaya and the Northeast, while stressing the need for greater exposure and institutional support for local artists.
