Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the upcoming 39th National Games in Meghalaya would be plastic-free, with efforts underway to make the event fully biodegradable. He shared this during a visit to Nongpiyur Government LP School, where he inspected a toilet built from recycled single-use plastic under the S.U.P.E.R. Campaign 2024.

The Chief Minister revealed plans for a ₹1890 crore investment in a factory to produce starch-based biodegradable bags and bottles, aiming to reduce plastic dependency. He emphasized a phased approach to a plastic ban, urging community participation.

He also praised a local recycling initiative led by Nicholas Kharkamni, which repurposes plastic waste into school infrastructure. The visit was attended by MLA Hamletson Dohling, education officials, and teachers, with Sangma also committing musical instruments for the school.
