PASSENGERS STRANDED AS ASSAM TAXI OPERATORS HALT MEGHALAYA-BOUND VEHICLES AT KHANAPARA
In a retaliatory move following Wednesday’s incidents in Shillong, members of an Assam-based taxi drivers’ association on Thursday reportedly blocked vehicles from Meghalaya at Khanapara, preventing them from proceeding into Assam.
The road blockade is understood to have been triggered by the alleged assault and vandalism of tourist vehicles bearing Assam registration during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) two-wheeler rally in Shillong on 19 August, 2026.
According to reports, the Assam taxi operators also restricted passengers from Assam from travelling towards Meghalaya, resulting in several commuters being stranded at Khanapara.
Passengers heading towards Meghalaya were reportedly forced to disembark from vehicles and continue their journey on foot, amid heightened tensions between transport operators from the two neighbouring states.
The latest development comes amid growing concern over possible retaliatory actions following the incidents in Shillong, with the situation at Khanapara being closely watched to prevent further escalation.
