Meghalaya Minister for General Administration Department, Sosthenes Sohtun, has underscored the significance of the upcoming Meghalaya Census 2026–27, describing it as a crucial step towards modernising data collection through a fully digital process.
Highlighting the scale and importance of the exercise, Sohtun said the census would play a vital role in strengthening governance, planning, and delivery of public services across the state. He called for active cooperation from citizens to ensure the success and accuracy of the enumeration process.

Addressing concerns regarding the deployment of teachers for census duties, the minister maintained that teachers are well-suited for the task. He assured that enumeration work can be carried out after school hours, thereby ensuring minimal disruption to academic activities.

The minister further emphasised that with proper coordination and public participation, the digital census initiative is expected to mark a significant milestone in Meghalaya’s administrative framework.
