The Government of Meghalaya on Wednesday entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Starlink India to roll out advanced satellite-based connectivity in the state.

The government stated that despite significant progress in infrastructure, technology and governance in recent years, connectivity in remote areas, including schools and health centres, continues to pose a challenge. The new partnership is expected to bridge this gap by enhancing access to healthcare, improving educational opportunities and supporting livelihoods in rural communities.
It further noted that efforts are underway to develop Shillong into a major IT and technology hub in the Northeast, aimed at creating employment opportunities for the youth and strengthening the state’s digital ecosystem.

Senior officials from SpaceX and Starlink, including Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, and Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink Operations, were present during the MoU signing in New Delhi.
