MEGHALAYA CHIEF MINISTER ALLOCATES ₹2 CRORE TO DR. H. GORDON ROBERTS HOSPITAL FOR HEALTHCARE IMPROVEMENTS


On May 14, 2025, Chief Minister, of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma announced the release of ₹2 crore under the Meghalaya Healthcare Advancement Policy (MHAP) 2024 to Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Shillong. This initiative aims to address healthcare gaps and support mission-run hospitals.
In his address, Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma praised mission institutions and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare, noting that Meghalaya allocates over 8.5% of its budget to healthcare, the highest among Indian states. He highlighted the 45% reduction in maternal mortality and emphasized that the funds are for long-term use, allowing the hospital to decide on their allocation.
Chairman of the Hospital Governing Board, Rev. S.S. Majaw chaired the event, which included a welcome address by Consultant in Medicine, Dr. Meban Aibor Kharkongor Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Kenneth R.L. Nongpyiur, briefed on MHAP-funded projects, including a new ICU complex, solar power installation, and life-saving equipment. The ₹2.95 crore project will be completed in four phases over 18-24 months.
Dr. Nongpiur also highlighted that the new ICU will offer affordable care, especially for underserved areas, with support from the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) and the Poor Patient Fund.
Administrative Officer of the Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, K.W. Marbaniang presented a memorandum requesting additional support for equipment and infrastructure. The Chief Minister assured positive consideration, reaffirming support for mission hospitals across Meghalaya. The event strengthened collaboration between the government and mission healthcare institutions, underscoring the vision of inclusive and accessible healthcare.
